2 Queens Visit Sunny New Brighton

HUNDREDS of people lined New Brighton’s promenade and outside the Floral Pavilion theatre to catch a glimpse of Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh as they visited on December 1st.  Also there was our 1st GiANT Queen which was seen by Queen Elizabeth and was very popular, with groups of people queueing to have photos taken with her all day.

 What are the GiANTS?

A Chester based not-for-profit Social Enterprise & Community Interest Company.
CHESTER THE GiANT CITY produce large scale (typically 12ft- 14ft) 'GiANTS' that represent a variety of people, occupations and visions. The modern GiANTS follow on from a Celtic, through Roman and Medeval tradition of giant building of which Chester was the English centre. The idea behind the GiANTS is that communities and companies make or sponsor a GiANT that in some way reflects the nature, aspirations or image of the group and that these GiANTS then become part of a wider celebration of culture in the City.

Ysbyty Ifan children help make 15' Giant Welsh Lady
Apr 5 2012 by Samantha Castle, North Wales Weekly News

CHILDREN’S charity Action For Achievement have been working with Ysbyty Ifan Primary School, seamstress Ela Jones and Artist Luned Rhys Parri to create a 15ft Giant Welsh Lady. The Giant was made to represent Wales at the Chester Festival on June 4. Her name is Sian and she will be accompanied by villagers from Ysbyty Ifan, keen to represent their community.

The Giant will travel from Chester, across North Wales to appear at the Urdd where she is sure to attract attention. Every child from Ysbyty Ifan School was involved in helping to make the face, hat and hands, which were constructed from bubble wrap, cardboard, paper and cotton sheets.

Action for Achievement’s Manager Lyn Wakefield said: “The children were amazing, they worked really hard and all those involved were very positive. Even local farmers came to help put Sian together, it was a real community effort.”

Lyn added: “None of us had built a Giant before and the seamstress was very surprised when I first phoned her and asked if she could make a Welsh costume for a 15ft woman.”

It’s been a huge learning curve but now everyone is looking forward to seeing Sian make her debut in June. She is currently safely housed in a warehouse in Chester with a group of Giants from other communities.

Anyone who wants further information is welcome to call Lyn on 07768 738294 or email Afaruralconwy@aol.com.

GiANT Queen Opens Indian Cultural Variety Show.

The GiANTS first ‘official’ Jubilee Celebration appearance opened a very entertaining evening at the Robert Bolt Theatre in the Sale Waterside Arts Centre organised by Trafford *Shankh (a local Hindu community group) on February 25th. Attended by local dignitaries (below) and Hindu community members, the show astounded all with the richness of Indian cultural heritage through classical to Bollywood dances, poetry presentation through dance and singing and instrument playing. All this was presented with grace and the traditionional blowing of the Shankh (Hindu way of symbolising auspiciousness and respect) by a father and 8 year old daughter (the Banerjees) team. Leaving the audience with lasting pleasant memories of the evening, it was indeed a most befitting humble tribute to the start of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee year celebrations.

*Shankh is a conch shell having a strong association with the Hindu religion.  When blown it announces the victory of good over evil.

Of Chinese extraction Nadine Prasertsri, one of our amazing GiANTEERS , wanted to create her very own Chinese Dragon so that communities would have the opportunity to celebrate New Year. Below are the original Chinese Dragon drawings by Oliver Threlfall, Nadine hard at work making the 12ft GiANT and Chester's Chinese Community sharing using our GiANT Dragon as part of their celebrations out on the streets of Chester.
